'The Sands of Time '

 ‘The Sands of Time’

Launching on the 6th of April 2012

Sophisticated Largesse

Jewellery In Gold

In January 2011, Sian Evans fulfilled a lifelong dream; to go to and return from Timbuctu, Mali. A place half remembered, remote, redolent with nineteenth century tales of far flung desert nomads and sword wielding blue skinned warriors, missing adventurers and of their horrible fevered deaths.

She travelled with Alyssa Moxley, friend, sound artist and writer. The aim; to get to Timbuctu in time for the Festival In The Desert at Essekane, deep in the sands of the Sahara to film, record and, most importantly, witness this amazing gathering.

A meeting of 8,500 Tuareg nomads who come together each winter to celebrate, meet with long missed friends, marry, race camels, buy and sell salt and silver ….and to listen to music. The greatest and remotest desert music festival on the planet.

On the journey Sian met and filmed Malian jewellers, artisans and traders. She spent an evening working with the Chief of the Artisans in Timbuctu. One memorable meeting was with a real life tomb raider, an Indiana Jones dressed in desert robes. The ancient sandy tombs of the Tuareg lie outside Timbuctu. There are many more stories to tell…….

‘The Sands of Time’ is the conclusion to this adventure and continues Sian’s fascination and skill with storytelling. Her collection is an evocation of the past through the crafts of the present.

Her own. The Sahara. Our History

Red Gallery have been documenting the East London art scene and in 2010 produced the East End Promise exhibition and catalogue, a record of the area from 1985 – 2000, created by those that lived through this transformative time.
EAST POP is a living document of what is happening now and gives exposure to art and design collectives who have used their strength as groups of creative individuals to produce dynamic exhibitions, live art events, products and publications.
It is an exciting opportunity to bring East London artists and designers together and we believe EAST POP will have cultural historical significance in years to come.
EAST POP is a project initiated by Red Gallery with artist/curators Alice Herrick and Kate Kotcheff.
